An Interview With M. Elizabeth Ravensblood
Questions by Jackssilverwolf
1) What's your real name?
The M. stands for Meghan. My friends call me Meg.
2) Where are you from?
I'm from a very small and conservative town in Ohio and since have moved to a larger city in Ohio. I have an odd love/hate relationship with my home state. Occasionally I think of moving away but I'll admit fall in Ohio is one of the most beautiful sights in the world.
3) Where did the name M. Elizabeth Ravensblood come from? Does it have some significance?
Choosing a penname I knew almost immediately that I wanted to be M. Elizabeth, I think it has an enigmatic quality. As for the Ravensblood, my real last name begins with an 'R' and I wanted something a little gothic, a tad dark and looking at the books on my shelves, my eyes lit on my Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe. Ever since I was a little girl, I've loved The Raven and Ravensblood suddenly clicked in my mind.
4) Why did you start writing Skewed Fiction and other kinds of High Risk Romance ?
Following the lack of closure for Spuffy at the end of Buffy and it not getting a decent resolution on Angel either, I moped around the boards and discovered fanfiction for the first time ever. It happened to coincide with a change in my work schedule which left me awake at an unholy hour when Court TV was airing Profiler. The episodes Modus Operendi and Venom, I felt there was a very intense sexual undercurrent between Jack and Samantha. But I assumed no one felt the way I did, imagine my surprise when one night I googled and stumbled across Skewed Believers! I felt inspired and began to write my first story Obsessions which crossed over with Buffy. My writing attracted a few fans and I continued to write.
My original intent was to write Spuffy, but the lesser known Skewed 'ship captivated me. There's a very dark and sexy appeal to Jack. Jack and Spike have a fair amount in common in that they both love obsessively and that above all is their motivation. I think in someways that Jack/Samantha paved the way for Spike/Buffy, if only in a small way. Had Spuffy occurred before Skewdom, Jack and Samantha may have burned up the screen as they do in my writing.
As to my other 'ships I dabble with, they are all of a similar vein, Sophie/Alexander Lucard from Dracula the Series, Hannibal/Clarice, and Spuffy all appeal to me because I like the sheer challenge of making an unsympathetic character into a romantic hero while remaining in character. The forbidden ships have a senuality to them that is intense and undeniable. For me, Jack and Samantha are the epitomy of taboo eroticism. People often say they would die for love, I like my characters to be willing to kill for love.
5) Why are you a fan of Skewed Fiction?
Jack and Samantha are indeliably intertwined as characters. Without Jack, Sam is a working mom who's in danger of being a Mary Sue. Jack's pursuit and the idea that sweet Sam has the Samantha that Jack perceives withing her, gives her depth and passion. In Skew fic, Sam is at the precupice and descends into Jack's realm and is transformed. There's a twisted romantic quality to Skewed Believer Profiler fanfiction.
6) How did you first get into Profiler?
When the show first aired I caught a couple episodes but most ones I saw were from the infamous and maligned Season 3. Donald Lucas was pretty off-putting. This past summer (2004) I had a work schedule that left me awake at 4 AM and I began watching it on Court TV from the beginning and got hooked. Forensics and crime shows have always appealed to me, it was just a matter of seeing Dennis Christopher as Jack and not the bad Donald Lucas plot for me to love Profiler. I'm very glad I did because it helped get me into writing fanfiction and I've met some amazing people as a result.
7) Where do you get your ideas?
Wow, that's a difficult one to answer. Some of my ideas are episode based and I'll consider what about the episode could be bent into a Skewed Believer plot. Others simply come to me out of the blue. Sometimes I'll read a fanfiction challenge for Profiler or another fandom and it will inspire me. Other times as in the case with Portrait of Love, I'll purposely put the pair in an unusal situation so they'll see one another in a a different light. One positive aspect of the 'ship is that because Jack's point of origin for stalking Sam Waters is never established definatively so there's all sorts of plot flexability. And my other ships are also very flexable. I like lots of room to play with my characters.
8) Do you give autographs?
Never considered it before, but I suppose I could sign my name and scan it onto the artwork for one of my stories.
9) Will you continue to write Skewed Fics for all eternity?
Eternity is an awfully long time. But I can say I love writing, am a passionate Skewed Believer and have no plans for giving up writing fanfiction anytime soon. I have a number of stories underway and new stories to post soon.
10) Do you plan to publish your work outside of the net?
One day I hope to be published as an author. I'm already published as a poet, but my ambition is to be a romance novelist. It's unlikely my Skewed fanfiction would ever be published in light of it flying blatantly in the face of society's moral compass, but I certainly wouldn't refuse if the opportunity arose. I'm working on several original works that I hope to eventually have published and in the mean time I will continue writing fanfiction and embracing my inner Skewed Goddess.
11) This is your first official interview, how about a profound and lofty quote for posterity.
If you think beyond the physical realm, a quill ceases to be a pen and parchment ceases to be paper. In a writer's hand the quill transforms, as it pours out all the writer's love and hate, their anger and their fantasies. The parchment accepts the quill's caress and turn the sensual strokes into something glorious and lasting.
12) Any last thoughts you'd like to share with your readers?
I'd like to thank my readers for taking the time to read my work and for their kind and encouraging words. There's a lot of fanfiction to choose from to read and I'm honored that you choose to read mine. Your feedback and emails are inspiring.
